| 6 | 7 | 8Events on June 8, 2013 Science Festival
Starts: 12:00 am
Ends: June 9, 2013 - 12:00 am
Location: WPI
Description: In celebration of our second year hosting a NASA Centennial Challenge, WPI is once again transforming our campus into a family-friendly festival of science and technology. Join us at TouchTomorrow 2013 on Saturday June 8th, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., for an out-of-this-world experience filled with interactive exhibits, learning, games, and fun.
Continuing a stellar tradition
Last summer over 7,000 people attended TouchTomorrow 2012 to help WPI celebrate our historic achievement of being the first university to host a NASA Centennial Challenge. The event was truly a day to remember as participants of all ages engaged in hands-on learning and exploration.
We’re working hard to make sure that this year’s festival continues the tradition and brings guests even more excitement and education around science, technology, engineering, and math.
Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect:
Explore Space, Robots, and More
• Meet Captain Stephen G. Bowen, a NASA astronaut from Massachusetts who has completed three spaceflights and seven spacewalks. He will be speaking at 11am and 2:30pm.
• Lisa May will be speaking at 12pm. Lisa May is the program executive for MAVEN, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission, in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. In her spare time, she acts as the female voice of NASA’s ScienceCasts.
• Check out returning NASA favorites including the Robonaut Hand, MarcBot, Be a Bot, Marc 3 Suit, and the Starfish tent
• Take a step into the future as you build and launch a virtual model of NASA’s Space System Launch rocket—the real rocket will take off in 2017 and will bring explorers as far as Mars.
• NASA’s Lunar Quest, a simulated trek across the moon’s surface using satellite imagery
• Lunarscape floor map. Walk on the moon!
• Rock out to a Robot Band. The band will be on stage a few times during the festival at 1pm and 3:30pm.
• Make your own slime! Combine a few basic ingredients to make this unique substance that has qualities of both a liquid and a solid.
• Play Pop fly, the football game with a twist. Take a ping pong ball, paint stirrers, a wooden spool, and tape. Add your foot and ready, set, launch!
• Discover an enlightening and delicious way to explore numbers with M&M® Math
• Learn about the lifecycle of a star
• Craft your own flying devices at the paper airplane station
• Design a device to protect a water balloon brain
• Challenge your peers to see how long you can keep a specially designed bubble in the air
• Examine soil samples to detect nematodes (roundworms), and bring home a kit to test your own yard
• Find out why you love, or hate, cilantro. Take part in this Citizen Science project to explore the genetics of taste.
Get your hands on innovative research from WPI
• Meet Archie, a PR2 (personal robot) that is spurring advances in human-robot collaboration and the use of robots in manufacturing
• Check out medical robots at the Automation and Interventional Medicine (AIM) Lab, including a robotic penguin used in therapy for autistic children, a rehabilitation glove for people recovering from strokes, and a robotic arm assistance device
• Tour the Assistance Technology Lab, where students and professors will be demoing research devices created to assist people with disabilities
• Try out other exciting developments from WPI’s robotics team, including mobile robots, intelligent autonomous ground vehicles, and a robot that can mimic human emotion

Description: Hi! I have had many people RSVP for this event which is great but I just wanted to remind everyone that I need your payment for this trip no later than June 14. There is a black container outside in the right hand corner by my garage door that is labeled "Pack 23". Please feel free to drop your money in there or email me and I will come by and meet you to get it. If the money is not in by this date, we cannot get the group rate for the ferry tickets and the cost will go up. I have included the original email for anyone who did not see the details the first time. Please let me know if you ave any questions!
Thanks,
Pack 23 is exploring George's Island / Fort Warren on June 22nd! Details for our ferry departure will follow soon in an email as we are waiting for the summer ferry schedule to be posted but it will be sometime late morning and we will be leaving out of Quincy. This is a FUN day!
*Enjoy the sites and thrill of cruising across the harbor to George's Island!
* Historical author, Jay Schmidt will be meeting us to give us a tour of the island and share some of its history. He has some great tales about the soldiers, the prisoners and their escape attempts and the famous ghost story about "the lady in black"!
* After the tour we can check out the visitor exhibits before having a picnic lunch (please bring a bagged lunch along!) and enjoy the grounds.
* Explore the grounds and the fort as much as you'd like! There are lots of interesting things to see---please be sure to wear comfortable, close-toed shoes as there are some rough paths. Please bring a flashlight as well to explore the fort---some places are pretty dimly lit and even dark.
* Ferry ride back at your leisure.
So, how much does this fun-filled family adventure cost?
Scouts are FREE! (Subsidized by the Pack)
Adults are $13.50 (includes round trip ferry ticket)

| 16 | 17 | 18 | 19 | 20 | 21Events on June 21, 2013 Den 1 & 8 Meeting
Starts: 6:15 pm
Ends: June 21, 2013 - 7:45 pm
Location: Rose L McDonald School
Description: Hello Den 8 and Den 1~
Our outdoor Meeting will next Friday, June 7th at 630 to about 9 at Sharon Caffrey's house. Her address is 51 Beacon St. It's a back road so you can park on the side of the street.
I will need a count of who is attending so we can plan accordingly. Once I have this count I will send out a list of what is needed. This is a contribution from everyone in the Dens.
The meeting this year is geared to camping and prepping the boys for safety, cooking, gear (setting up their own tents) and having fun around the campfire. I'm hoping to see most of you at the camping trip on June 28-30th at Camp Norse!
Basic Rules:
1) Siblings can come but they can not partake in the Den Meeting part of the night. Please have something for them to do off to the side
2) There will be a couple Boy Scouts there to help-- I expect the same respect for them as the scouts give the Pack 23 leaders
3) We will be outdoors, please bring a chair to sit in. The scouts will be bringing sleeping bags to sit on. This gives them their own space on the ground without any pushing or bothering each other.
4) EVERYONE must participate during the skits and songs. Ask Wade-- If you do not I will make you come do it yourself in front of the group! (We have great pictures from him and Steve last year)
5) Please bring a water bottle/cup. (labeled) We will have Bug Juice. You do not need your mess kits this year as we will not be doing the cleaning station.
Breakdown of Meeting
1) Fire Safety - Lead by the Boy Scouts
2) Essentials needed for backpacking/camping
3) Buddy System
4) Tinfoil dinners - To make the cooking time quick we will be making ham, pineapple with a brown sugar glaze. Please let me know if you scouts will not eat ham at all. -- I need a couple parents to help with the set up station of this and cooking over the fire.
5) Camp gear
If anyone has a 2-4 person dome tent.. (small ones not the family size) that we can use that night, please let me know. I would like to break the scouts into groups of 4 with one tent each. Please make sure it is complete before you volunteer it. It needs the tent, stakes and the rainfly. (and ground cloth if you have one) Thank you!
6) practice of group skits
7) desserts
8) Skits and Songs
This will be our final song - please review it with your scout. It is sung to the tune of O Christmas tree.
This is a quiet song (Jack Spence)
Scout Vespers
Softly falls the light of day
As our campfire fades away
Silently each scout should ask
Have I done my daily task
Have I kept my honor bright
Can I guiltless sleep tonight
Have I done and Have I dared
Everything to be prepared
Thanks from the Den leaders
Bonnie, Kelly, Leighann, Janine, Steve
